Sai Balakrishnan

Sai Balakrishnan is an associate professor of city and regional planning at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research and teaching focus on urbanization and planning institutions in the Global South, and on the spatial politics of land use and property. Her work has been published in the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Urban Studies, Pacific Affairs, and Economic and Political Weekly, and has been quoted in media outlets including The Guardian. Balakrishnan’s book, Shareholder Cities: Land Transformations along Urban Corridors in India (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2019), explores the urbanization of the agrarian countryside in post-liberalization India by focusing on land contestations along economic corridors.
